When should I see a pelvic health physiotherapist?

It is never too early or too late to see a pelvic health physiotherapist. The therapists at Healthy Families have seen women throughout the life span, from pre-conception to post-menopausal. With that said, there are some recommended times when it comes to certain populations:

  • PREGNANCY If you aren’t experiencing any issues related to the pregnancy or your pelvic floor (i.e. back or hip pain, or leaking urine) then the most optimal time to see a pelvic floor physiotherapist is around 20 weeks. Typically, you would check in once in the second trimester, and then once or twice again closer to delivery.
  • POST-PARTUM It is optimal to first check in around 5-6 weeks postpartum. This way any issues from your delivery can be addressed, and proper exercises targeting your core and pelvic floor can be prescribed. Returning to intimacy is another topic we will address if this is something you are concerned about!
  • SURGICAL It is preferred to see women pre-operatively so that a baseline of your pelvic floor before surgery can be established, as well as set you up for success post-operatively with exercises you can be doing leading up to and after surgery.

Do you need a referral to see a pelvic health physiotherapist?

No, you do not need a referral from your doctor to come see a pelvic health physiotherapist. Sometimes, certain extended health care benefits may require a prescription from your doctor for submission.

Is pelvic health physiotherapy covered under general physiotherapy benefits?

Absolutely! All of our physiotherapists are registered with the Alberta College of Physiotherapists, so all of their services fall under the category of physiotherapy.

Do I need to re-schedule my appointment if I am menstruating?

No you do not! There is no reason to need to change your appointment if you get your period. This is 100% your comfort level, however, we can still do our full assessment.

If I have more questions, who can I contact?
